Remote client router configured with "ppp authentication chap callin" initiate call to hub router server and hub router sends challenge and authenticate client.

But client can not authenticate hub router. R1 and R2 connected with a serial link and R1 should send a challenge when it is called by R2, but R2 should not authenticate when it is called. When a router receives a ppp connection inbound it will challenge the initiating device with either "ppp authentication chap" or "ppp authentication chap callin".

The difference is that when the "callin" keyword is admitted, the initiating router don't challenge the router it connected to.

Let me say that another way. Without "callin" the initiating router actually asks the router it connects to authenticate itself. It's easy to think of ppp in the way a dial-up windows client works. The windows client does not ask the access server to authenticate itself.

Logic says that the windows device knows who it called. This is the behavior when the keyword "callin" is used on the access server or router. Now replace the windows pc with something that is more security conscious.

It could make the call, then ask the receiving access server or router to authenticate itself. Basically without the "callin" keyword, authentication is mutual and it doesn't matter which end initiated it. The way that helps me remember is to think of, if you are "calling in" to my house you need to show me some ID. So your solution 2 should be your setup.

Because R2 is "calling in" to R1. So R1 should be configured with the callin command. If you answer the phone assume no caller ID you want to figure out who is calling, so you authenticate them.
