I can well understand the staff-need-a-day-off angle, but that's best dealt with by superior workplace law that requires businesses to give staff the option, rather than by compelling businesses to shut.

Look, the freakin' thing was brand nooo - an' it bust! Anzac day is this country most important national holiday, way more important than Easter and Christmas.

Theres only 4 days a year when businesses must close, I dont consider that extreme. I will state that there are to many public holidays in the calender and some of them should be dumped.

Well your original post said businesses should be forced to close on all public holidays, so perhaps you should have specified that they should only be forced to close on some and the rest should be abolished. Anyway, be that as it may, why should businesses be forced to close on any public holiday Anzac Day, Easter, Christmas, whatever?

To me if businesses are forced to close on public holidays then those public holidays become as much a byword for inconvenience and illiberalism as a commemoration of whatever they are supposed to commemorate. The WWI diggers having the same sort of reverence in Australia that the Wild West characters do in the US. I tell youse what, on days like this the ugly skippy emerges - wrapping the Aussie flag around them, shouting "Aussie Anyways, the important thing, we should have a holiday.

If it's like today when it's on a weekend, then we should have Friday off by default. OK so I'm off to Bunnings to buy a passage set.
